The UN announced today that Argentina’s Lionel Messi has been named tourism ambassador responsible for the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
” Lionel Messi comes to help UNWTO, a United Nations specialized agency, to promote the importance of responsible travel,” the UN said in a statement to AFP.
The Argentine player joins Vicent del Bosque, former Spanish national and world champion in 2010, and Fernando Hierro, current director of the Spanish football federation, as the third public figure mobilized by OMT to witness the union between sport and tourism.
“Each of my trips allowed me to get to know other cultures and societies, as well as other ways of seeing the world, and I find it very rewarding,” Messi said in a statement.
“I am happy to participate in this action that promotes responsible tourism,” added the Argentine, after being elected ambassador on Saturday by UN Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.
